1♥ is enough.
I have an Ace and 5 hearts to the Jack. I don't want partner thinking I have a better hand.

2h

P is well placed to upgrade their hand BUT they will hesitate to do so if they fear there may be no entries to your hand, so they can take finesses. Hearts is our best bet to get us plenty of entries but we still probably have a couple of entries if p prefers to play in one of the black suits. The fact that we did not bid 2d (to show just short of an opening bid) should keep partners expectations from going overboard.

I bid 1H and don't even consider 2H.

I suppose a pair could, and maybe should, alter their agreements in this situation so that 2H shows only shape and says nothing about strength - it's not like 2 passed hands have much of a shot at game - but that's none of the partnerships I'm in.

Don't most players open this 2H in 3rd seat nowadays?"

2H is too much, but, nonvul, I'd at least try to assess how eager LHO is before deciding to pass instead of opening 1H.

I don’t understand. Isn’t the auction pass pass to us ?

2H

Partner knowes we are both passed hands, he wont go crazy, and it kills a lot of space.

I would not open this 2H, ..., I could, but I would not, I guess I am getting old.
With kind regards

I can see a situation where opener has long diamonds, and rebids them over 1/2♥, not sure what 3♥ says by a 3rd hand passed hand, but it could easily buy the contract when ops are making 4♦ and the vul is right

2H looks like the right amount.

Usually played 8-10, 4 cards, where I play. Let s say the 5th card compensates the lack of strength and the slightly inconvenient honor location (would be better with JTx S and xx D).

Anyway, what it promises is a bit less relevent due to the fact that partner already passed: this changes the logic of the bid. I do not expect partner to raise me in case they have a better than min X, I just hope it will be enough to shut S out (or that it will convince partner to go to 3 only with a fit and decent shape in case opps bid on).

I think that is mainly a NA deviation, certainly not common (nor well received) in mainland Europe, which is as anal uptight about the length of weak openings as is NA is about the HCP of 1NT.

Nevertheless I would bid 2♥ here, we are both passed hands (if I remember the thread).
