Some play direct dbl as 1 pt above min of 1NT and reopen dbl 1 pt above max of 1NT. if 1NT is 15-17
Direct: 16+

A double in direct position is often based on tricks, since you are on lead yourself. A double in 4th seat is usually ballanced since partner is expected to lead his own best suit, not speculating what your suit might be.
That being said, I prefer not to play penalty doubles on a strong 1NT. Use dbl for some of the shapes that don't fit in the structure. For example 4M5m.

If you want to play penalty doubles of NT, most will play that the immediate X shows a hand just better than the top of their range, in this case 18, and a protective double as a bit less - about 14-16.

I prefer penalty dbl's with opener's maximum range. So over a 15-17 dbl with 17+, over a 11-14 dbl with 14+,... But I just don't play penalty dbl's over strong 1NT's

I think in balancing seat vs strong NT one should use the same defense used in direct seat vs weak NT.
Double = penalty oriented
one/2 suiters shown the same way you do vs weak NT
At MP, doubling with marginal balanced hands should be done only if holding the majors (unless thir CC shows that they play Garbage Stayman): holding minors + a good balanced hand, we do not want them to runout to a good 2M partscore when the rest of the field will be in 1NT.
If they DO play Garbage stayman, it's a little safer to assume that weak responder does not have 44 in majors, and pard is likely to have length in the major.
