For those who would bid 3NT over 3♥, what is your call if partner pulls to 4♥?

I would have bid 4♠ kickback

That would have allowed you a choice opposite 2 keycards and the Queen, unlike 4NT which is endplayed. Would you bid slam?

Here is what was going on from both points of view. Do you agree with West's bidding?

Looks fine from a standard perspective, but East needs to appreciate that 4♥ is a slam try and hopefully West knows how to continue.

Moving above 3N could be wrong opposite 2236, but I think this can be solved by switching the 3♦ and 3♥ bids.

One of the Transfer Walsh versions I play would go
1♣ - 1♠ relay, may have 5♠ GI
3♣ as here - 3N 55xx
Now you have an easy path to the slam try.

I play that, when you ask for keycards, you are committing to bid slam if you have 4 keycards and the queen (or 5 keycards). If you can't commit to that, you should not be asking in the first place.

I agree with asking here. A third round diamond loser that you can't sluff on a club is incredibly unlikely.

I don’t think 4H is in any sense forcing. Ask yourself how you’d bid a mediocre 5=5 or 6=5 as responder, say KQxxx Kxxxx xx x? Passing 3N seems a tad unilateral.

This is definitely an under discussed sequence. Indeed, despite having almost every Bridge Workd published from 1975 onwards (when The MasterSolvers Club feature became phenomenal) I don’t think I’ve ever seen this discussed in print.

But despite it being non forcing, and despite having only one ace, I think I’m worth a 5H call. I’m definitely Not using keycard here, even if it were available. Why should it be? And how can I ever have a hand that knows what to do over most responses?

Meanwhile, 5H should help partner. Of course that may mean helping him to 5H down 1 when 4H would make.

Interesting.
Would you have bid to 6H over 5H as West?
