How do you bid this and more importantly, why? At this point in the auction, what do you think you know?

Double,

I note 1D was not alerted, but wish it was, smile

With that said, no good/bad 2nt, partner passed, so probably they have a wk nt type hand.

I know (at least) that partner has 12+ HCP and has 3- spades, 3 hearts, 4-5 diamonds, so probably 2353 or 3343.

I don't object to Jillybean's pragmatic 3NT, although it's probably going to be tough.

I assume X by South promised exactly 4 card spades (or strong hand).
What would X and 2S by North have promised in mainstream NA agreements?

Doesn't partner have 2 hearts most of the time

Depends upon the opponents agreements and style, but I would expect East to have 5 and West to have only 3 most of the time (West has not much, he's basically bidding on LoTT).

Could but will he or she? The pass is pretty important, mainly with this pard, showing minimal values but not shape particularly.

Vanilla agreements. 2S is simply competing with 4 spades.

This is the entire hand. The pass is hard to understand but happened.

The 3H bid is simply forcing and asking for more information, showing doubt about the best final contract. 3S is showing good 3 card support.

Opener might
want to look up responsive doubles

I've never heard of and never used responsive doubles in this situation, but that doesn't mean they're wrong, just that I'm a dinosaur.

Here is where I'm curious. After the 3S bid, how many gave even the slightest thought to playing 4S?

Why? I don’t understand that at all. Opener has various doubles at his disposal in a lot of auctions but I have never heard nor seen of any called a responsive double: a double tyst is technically used by the intervening side, not the opening side

np, what would you take double as by north over 2H?
takeout or other? I just use the phrase responsive as takeout here showing support outside of hearts, denying 4s

If not playing good/bad it seems..
