And by Bocchi and partners for 20+ years. For example, see Note 18 in the notes to the convention card Bocchi-Duboin used in the 2001 Bermuda Bowl.

I've always liked this variation

Here's the full hand, just in case anyone was curious how 4NT could go down.

IMP

This was in a team tournament and South made 3NT at the other table when team-mates failed to find a diamond lead.

In practice a wrongsiding problem, you make 8 or 10 depending on who plays it presuming you don't telegraph a diamond lead from W.

W does have some reason to lead diamonds on an auction similar to this such as 1H-2C-2S-3C-3D-3N-P.
But I imagine the other table went P-1C-1H-2N-3N-P or P-1N-2C-2D-3N-P or something.

Thanks to you, nullve and Davidkok who pointed out various similar improvements.
That do make a lot of sense, but unfortunately with current partners will have to go on ice.
This was just one bad hand that I thought worth discussing, I have had good mileage from playing 2 as no strength signal so far and it solves an important problem very simply.
