IMPs.

EW are intermediates, quite aggressive in bidding.
1♣ = 3+ cards
2NT here = 18-20 balanced, does not deny 4-card major.

N is an occasional partner, conservative in third seat by most people's standards. Double is undiscussed.

Please answer the polls about choice of lead and explain/discuss here (including choice of card if you think it is not obvious).

I lead a heart, it looks like dummy is either 3343 or has 5 diamonds in some 5332, there is a chance declarer is (332)5 but most likely he has a 4 card major, if partner has ♠KQxxx and out and they cash but declarer cashes 9 I've got this wrong, if partner hesitates and I lead a spade both of us deserve shooting.

I rank ...
1. ♥6 Second from bad suit.
2. ♣J Poor second choice.
3. ♦3 Wouldn't consider this for a second.
4. ♠A Second sight -- Monappo style :)

I added as an afterthought that double is undiscussed :)

Perhaps all the suits offer a reasonable lead - find partner with the right cards and the contract goes down - however as for a devastating lead that's another matter. With my regular partner I'd hope he'd open with something like ♠KQxxx and out with a 5431 shape third seat at favourable vulnerability, but here it's adverse vulnerability so less likely to happen. Though there's room for partner to have ♥KJ10x or similar here and put declarer under pressure from trick one.

I'm leading a small ♥, the ♥6, too.

Old style, double is "lead dummy's first suit", so a hesitation would indicate "I want to double for a spade lead ... oh damn, that isn't what double means"

Some players with weakish 33M hands might fake a 1D reply with 3 cards and 4 clubs, to be able’ pass partner’s 1M or « right side » 1NT. They would only bid 1NT with 8-10. So, barring a 7 or a poor 8-count who bids 3NT now after bidding 1D first, we can conclude that dummy’s D are genuine, 4+ cards and often 5 or more. The D lead is therefore less appealing.
I think I’m going with my 2nd best H, but the CJ or SA might get better results on some layouts

Thanks to those who replied so far.

Opener was 4333, responder 2452 and partner 5215 with the two black kings.
I was looking for a sanity check on hearts lead given that at other table they lead J♣ which turned out to be the only way to defeat the contract.

Were they put off hearts by opps auction ? YOu'd have thought responder might have tried to find out if they had a 4-4 heart fit

Perhaps. West's hearts were JT92.

Yes, N passed both.
Would you be in a hurry to bid ♠KT642, in unfavourable zone opposite a passed hand at IMPs?
