The title of this topic and the modified deal above comes from Eric Jannersten's classic book on
declarer play. I unhestitatingly recommend this book to all novices and intermediate players as
it shows the thought processes of an expert declarer and and highlights what bridge is all about,
deduction,detection and inference.
You are South, declarer in 4 West leads the K When dummy goes down, you see
there is a sure trump loser, the A is missing and the lead has opened up two
further heart losers. Assess the hand and plan the play.?
"It is not enough to be a good player, you must also play well"
- Dr Tarrasch(1862-1934)German Chess Grandmaster

Bridge is a game where you have two opponents...and often three(!)

"Any palooka can take tricks with Aces and Kings; the true expert shows his prowess
by how he handles the two's and three's" - Mollo's Hideous Hog

FYP. Jannerston wrote an interesting trilogy on card-play...
-- The only chance -- the above deal might not fit the title, as there seem to be several lines.
e.g. a simple A, A, K, JK (finessing and discarding a ), to Q, A, to K ...
-- With open cards -- double-dummy problems,
-- Play safe and win -- safety-plays.

The simplest line would appear to be to play for:

or similar (W can be 3-3 in the minors), I duck the first heart, win the second, hook the club and dispose of a heart then play a diamond up, if the diamond K holds, I play 2 rounds of trumps back to hand and another diamond

You make 10 Tricky with 2 top ,A,KQ and 3(pitching an ) and 2 ruffs. Perhaps it's better to play A,K,x..

If you play AKx you lose 4 tricks immediately, if you take the clubs out for your pitch before playing spades, you are an entry short to lead diamonds twice from hand, that's why I played the first diamond before drawing trumps.

The play on minors is before of trump suit.

Here is a vaguely remembered, simplified old chestnut "Only chance" problem,
(hint) which should amuse MasterHo :)
West opens 4 and South overcalls 4.
West leads Q and East ruffs.

Press Next to see dummy.

What is your only realistic chance?

Am I right in thinking I need W to Have started with two small spades, 2 minor suit singletons and the 9 outstanding hearts, and if I played low on the heart I'm sunk ?

:( Not a perfect "Only chance" because there' are other feasible lines :(
:) The intended line might be harder to spot, if North has 52 rather than K2 :)
