As a brand-new TD, based on a sample of 1 tournament that I found the courage to run, I have discovered that the TD job is 90% substituting and 10% zero tolerance complaints.
The system seems to be well set up for making substitutions easily.
But not for Zero Tolerance complaints.
I think I need to be able to see the Chat that went on at a table, including privately, prior to when I entered the table as the TD.
The one case of ZT I had required one player to manually repeat to me what had been said by another.
How much easier if I could just see exactly what had been said!

You are out of luck.
There is no way for you to see PUBLIC chat that occurred before you joined the table. You can, if you like, ask the kibitzers, and the partners of the complainers. Or you can issue stern warning and write to Abuse, who can look up the public chat and take appropriate action (I seriously doubt abuse will share with you what was said in that public chat, however).
As far as private chat... that simply is not tracked. Even abuse can not look that up.

Ben, could people take screen shots of private chat and send them to abuse? And if you record all chat (by clicking the option to log chat) does that also record private chat?
Of course, these can be altered, so it may not be that useful.

YEs, this is the most common practice.
