Team match, IMPs, good opps.

You're playing 2/1 nothing fancy, 15-17 NT.

Try for slam or sign off?

I like my controls, intermediates, shape and fifth heart, so a club splinter seems in order.

I use whatever method to agree trump and show shortness, so yes, I try for slam.

For me that's 3, agreeing as trump and showing ambiguous shortness.

If 4 is a splinter here then I would bid it. Partner will hopefully recognise a mild slam try and act accordingly.

4 if splinter, otherwise 3

This is the kind of hand that needs no wastage. So 4C followed by 4H over 4D. This shows a mild slam try rather than a full blooded slam try.

For slam you really need partner to not have much wasted in clubs, so this bid is ideal.
A lot of people play 4 as KC Gerber, it is hands like this why I don't.

Most of the people who play 4c as RKC, at least the ones that know what they are doing, are playing the "Baze" structure, where 3S handles all the splinters, and 3nt by opener asks. So you don't lose the spl playing 4c as RKC. What you lose is cue bidding room opposite the no spl + fit slam try which bids 4D. OTOH Baze lets you show a spade splinter which direct spl usually does not (3S usually being used to set hearts and being slam try w/o minor shortness), unless you put some extra artificiality there.

OK I'm definitely growing old, I signed off without even considering slam here. Other table cued and reached a making slam, at which point I looked at the hand again and realized it was quite nice and probably worth an attempt.
