Your screen-mate, East, explains 3S as a stopper ask and 4S as a cue (undiscussed) and it is your lead against 6D. Assume that you have been given the correct explanation of their methods. Your go.

Congrats to MAHAFFEY, (Zia, Meckstroth, Brogeland, Lindvist) for yet another triumph. If you know Take 1 or Take 2, don't spill the beans for others (and why do people always spill beans rather than egg, tomato or ketchup at breakfast?).

Thanks again Paul, I rank
  • J = Risks giving away a trick but East seems to have s and West probably has Kx.
  • A = Try to grab it while you can.
  • 3 = Partner didn't Lightner double and this seems passive
  • 9 = Unbid suit

I'll go with Nige1 and lead a diamond. I feel like partner has pretty much nothing, perhaps a heart quack at best. If they've got 6D, 4H, 2C tricks we're doomed anyway, so gotta hope they only have 3 heart tricks and can't get anything more in clubs (unlikely since we hold five), and they end up a trick short.

There may be another case for a low club lead. Imagine:

xx
Axx
AQxxx
AKT

Kx
KQTx
Kxxxx
xx

A heart lead or a spade lead gives away #12 immediately. On a trump lead, declarer would likely play the top hearts and fall back on the double club hook in reserve. Of course, he can still make it on this layout if he has a read on our shape, but it is not ironclad - it would probably make a good play problem on its own.

I will go with the spade A. West has essentially gone hog wild and placed the contract in 6 opposite nothing more than a good dia raise on a max of 29 hcp. I infer that the only reason west felt their hand was that good was because they were short in spades when their p denied a spade stop. I am hoping west is not void with my lead. The lead addresses my real fear, that west is something like 1246 and opposite 2353 will be able to pitch their spade loser on the third heart.

The club honors and general shape, absolutely. LHO will not have four hearts.

The relative strength between the two hands - probably, but if you want to take away a little from LHO and add it to RHO

The spade position - unclear, but other layouts probably do not matter on the lead unless I blow a trick.

This was Brogeland's reasoning I think, but the A is the only lead to let it through as your RHO has Kxxx and has misbid.

"definitely that's what I like to play when I'm playing standard - I want to be able to bid diamonds because bidding good suits is important in bridge" - Meckstroth's opinion on weak 2 diamond

It may be quite some time before I ever see the words "world class" - referring to bridge anyway - near my name anywhere. I have not a clue what west was doing or thinking though their system may have hampered their ability to communicate. I have to give them credit though, that was a wonderful sequence to convince me to try the spade ace :(((((((((((((((((((((((((

I think normally you can add "|399|300" or similar at the end of a handviewer entry to resize it. But as a workaround, if you right-click on it and choose This Frame -> Open in new window (I'm using Firefox), you get it in full size.

It was unlucky to lead the SA - at the end of the vugraph record the operator said that 3S was explained as a singleton and NS called the TD. From Lamford's comment I guess that was a misbid, not a misexplanation.

Yes, the TD was shown the system notes by Palma which reinforced that it was a misbid.
