Here is a my basic Gib hand.

First :

4 says " 4+, 20-TPs."
If Gib W really holds 19-20TPs, it should overcall instead of passing in the most of situations.
If Gib W really holds 19-20TPs, 4 is a low bid or 4 is a forcing bid in fact.
Obviously it is impossible.

Second :

Takeout says " 4+,5-,5-.4+,14-16TPs."
If really holds 5, Gib E should overcall 1 instead of passing, so 4" plus" is impossible, merely 4-card in fact.
This takeout basically based on stortness in , so 5- is impossible, but shortness in in fact.

Your best post in months Lycier. Makes very valid points without posting 10 different hands and writing a small book.

The description of 4C is completely inept and not helped by the omission of any lower limit to the strength of the hand. And some positive lower limit can be inferred from the fact that he had available the opportunity to bid 3C and instead chose to jump.

East is absolute maximum for double, having in fact a total point in reserve over the top of the upper limit described. If West's 4C is in any way encouraging for the auction to continue, whether forcing or not, What business does East have in passing? Sure, 5C fails, but mainly because the Spade Ace is offside, which I suggest is odds against, but in any event that is somewhat irrelevant to the point.

Personally I would bid 3H rather than 2H at the table (and worry about that being passed out with game on). But at least that is down to the known limitations of GIB's hand evaluation algorithm, and the hand and bid fit that algorithm, warts and all.

20- TP is less than 20 total points. A good argument is it should state a lower higher limit and lower limit number but it has its bid- it doesn't need 19-20 TP.

20- TP is NOT less than 20 total points. It is fewer than 21 total points.
