I think, for the "big" european meeting city of Vienna could be a perfect
location...
It's a wonderful place in the heart of Europe and still half so expensive
as other metropoles...

According to this survey, London is ludicrously expensive, Vienna ~20% cheaper, and Glasgow ~10% cheaper still.

Can I just ask why it's relevant to talk about other venues? The discussion is about a meeting in the UK. Do we care if it's 12.7% cheaper in Timbuktu? Yes there are other nice places to meet, but unless you are arranging such a meeting, why discuss that here?

Yes, the idea is to arrange another meeting.

It seems unfair to me to arrange another meeting now that Wayne has booked, hired etc. It is also pointless to discuss which is the cheapest place for the get-together. What good is it that Asuncion in Paraguay is the cheapest, if it costs 1 zillion money to get there?

It costs £10 ($18.87) for me to travel to London, so I can live with x% higher costs on site. For members living near Paris, Boston, Cape Town, Shanghai, Budapest and Jyväskylä it will be cheaper for them to have the meeting there, etc. etc.

So far I have had a reasonable response about 20+ have expressed an interest in going, none have committed yet but this is similar to the last time I arranged one, I think people will need a few more weeks, one thing about it is, if you have never met anyone from cyberland before it can seem a daunting prospect.

in answer to your question, we may be the only ones going it depends how successfully Pclayton and hrothgar markets their Las Vegas meeting, please lads [ui] if you are arranging a US meeting, use your own string as I am trying to organise a face to face social meet in England.

I think I may go, but cannot commit either.

Wow

Sorry havent been to forums for a while (trying to wean myself off it) so havent read about this meeting...seems like a good idea and if i am around at the time (holiday time for me :) )

Of course i would like to recommend Bashforth-on-the-Riddle as a venue. For several reasons:

1) It is in the middle of nowhere so you are bound to get lost.

2) There is only one pub in the village and that happens to have a lovely pentagram on the wall with candles around it.

3) Everyone is related to everyone else so you will have no problems with remembering anyone's surname.

4) They even have a resident gay stray dog called Ruff which is a bit of a novelty (so make sure you get a dog-sitter).

5) You are woken up in the morning with a cockerel-call at 5.22 am.

6) There is a ghost on horse-back that rides through the town every Thursday evening shouting 'The Vikings are coming, The Vikings are coming' (no reference to Roland of course).

Just an idea anyway

Hi Wayne

Geof has just been given permission from the boss here {Joy} to say that we will be able to come that weekend. If you need any help arranging tables organising games or any of the other trivia of the weekend just give a shout.

Will you be trying a duplicate bridge tourney if so I would like to offer a prize of 5 bottles of wine (ulteria motives as I like wine :D ) .
Bridge at BBO is more important than life ;-)

Just a reminder to all.

Not too far to 5th August.

Hope to see some of you there and after you've recovered from the shock - we'll deink and play bridge not necessarily in that order!

Steve

A cautionary note re. accommodation costs.

I remember some years ago attending the EBU summer meeting at Brighton. The EBU at the time posted details of a number of possible places to stay. Those who, when booking, admitted to attending the EBU congress were consistently charged HIGHER room rates (wherever they booked) than those who did not admit to any connection. Although I do not think that any blame attached to the EBU for that, it did get a fair amount of stick "by association". It is not hard, from a Landlord's point of view, to come to the conclusion based on market force theory that a higher price can be justified: Those going for a random weekend can go anywhere. Those attending the conference don't have that choice.

I don't suggest that this would happen now, and I expect that sceptic has it covered, but forewarned is forarmed as they say.
Psych (pron. saik): A gross and deliberate misstatement of honour strength and/or suit length. Expressly permitted under Law 73E but forbidden contrary to that law by Acol club tourneys.

Psyche (pron. sahy-kee): The human soul, spirit or mind (derived, personification thereof, beloved of Eros, Greek myth).
Masterminding (pron. mPosted ImagesPosted ImagetPosted Imager-mPosted ImagendPosted Imageing) tr. v. - Any bid made by bridge player with which partner disagrees.
