I just played a hand against GIB, it was in a 3 spade contract and trumps were drawn

with declarer on lead the cards were

♣6

opposite

♦AKT

the club was a loser and the J of diamonds had not been played

GIB play: low to the ten :D

Not that it excuses the act, but I wonder whether your having promised 12 total points meant that GIB thought that you had to have the J of Diamonds by then. Not that this gives you 12 TP even then, but it might have something to do with the reason.
