My link

IMPS, ACBL robot individual

Is 4 the correct system bid here, or should North bid 3 to show shortness? I probably won't be able to bring 3NT home, but it has a play while 5 is stillborn.

3 is the correct system bid on the North cards in an uncontested auction. Perhaps the 3 bid means something else in a contested auction.

3 would mean the same, but it asks for 9+HCP ( and not bare A/K in the shortness ), based on certain GF.

Note taken, to be addressed if 8HCP is still good enough to be used with 0-1 cards.
