MPs, club night, weak opps (as you can tell from East's bidding :))

2NT = Lebensohl, either 0-7 or GF with exactly 4-card spades. (2S instead would also be 0-7, NAT)

300 was a complete bottom - even though only one pair bid the grand, everyone else was in at least 4S or 5D. Should North remove the second X, or South do something other than X?

I think North to blame
"definitely that's what I like to play when I'm playing standard - I want to be able to bid diamonds because bidding good suits is important in bridge" - Meckstroth's opinion on weak 2 diamond

well S is happy to double again even if N has 0 points and its hardly like S had a takeout double and suddenly has a penalty double it seems clear he's showing extras no?

North hasn't shown yet the nature of his 2NT bid. By bidding 4 2nd turn he says "I gotz the GF spades hand".

It will still be hard to bid the grand, but at least 6 should be reached now.

Bidding 4S now would show the GF hand that he thought he had when he bid 2NT.

North decided he had a GF hand with 4 spades (which he doesn't) and then changed his mind, despite South showing a big hand by making a second take-out double.

Personally I would also bid 2NT and then pull the double to 4 showing specifically an invitational hand. The grand might now be reached, but it is not easy - maybe 5-6-7. A direct jump to Three Spades works better, but I play that as forcing.

100% North!!!

With a plain vanilla 12-14 TOX hand, South would simply Pass and let North make the next move. So the second Double has to show extras.

So North has to cooperate and show that the Lebensohl bid WAS the game force hand by bidding 4 . With 4+ s and the 0-7 hand, North would bid 2 initially, so the 4 bid now MUST be the game force.

Looking at the South hand, the missing honors are AQ AKQJ Q Q. Taking a clue from the bidding, it's hardly likely that East is going to bid 4 all alone without a decent heart holding. So it would seem pretty hard for North to have a game forcing hand without at least one high honor. So South might consider simply bidding a 5 NT Grand Slam Force.
