What would p, X, 4N be in our PA?

5♦ won't make unless pard has extras, in which case he might well double 4♠ (we pull to 5♦ then).

if p wants to go to 6 I doubt they will be upset with my hand, If p
is minimum we are not a favorite to make but then maybe the opps are
favored to make 4s. I know I would be one heck of a lot happier if
we can push the non vul opps to 5s before x. I view the 5d bid as
somewhat low risk with high possible reward so at IMPS that seems
a reasonable overall strategy. The downside is if the match is even
I remain uncertain if we will net more positive results by bidding
or passing and I suspect passing will come out ahead but it just
seems so wrong here with the non vul opps probably ready willing and
waiting to bid 5s:)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) We will never
miss a slam by bidding 5d but we sure might if we pass and I hate that
idea.

I have 122 such hands. In 72 of them there was a pass after 4S.

The same problem likely exists at the other table. If the state of the match is "even to slightly unclear". I want to defend.

Maybe a disadvantage of double is that partner is more likely to make an aggressive lead if we double, expecting some strength in my hand. I think a trump lead could work well here (partner won't find the diamonds lead anyway).

It's good positionally but the 4♠ bidder doesn't always have 5 so Ax opposite 2 in pards hand would hurt. So would being on an 8-card diamond fit.
I'm going to double to show a pulse and cross my fingers.
Opposite a typical lower end double a couple of round suit jacks on my right could sink us and partner may be able to move knowing I have some values. Passing feels either wimpy or if partner doubles again I'm deciding on offence or defense and I want partner (as much as possible) to make that choice.
As per Fluffy above, pass then decide over a 2nd double is close (too close for my liking) but partners choice over a direct double may be clearer. Maybe not.

"It was true ugliness.
I held Ax xxx KQ9xx 9xx. It went 1S-double-4S to me and I bid 5D red vs white, probably not right with so many losers but I thought that either 4S or 5D would likely make. The 4S bidder had a bunch of defense an doubled me. They had 500 but let me out for 200 (they claimed my questions about their carding misled them, but the defense was pretty easy). 4S would have made if pard led a club from Qxxxx rather than from his AJ9x of hearts or his ATxx of diamonds. Our teammates bid 5S over 5D and went for 300. We thus lost 11 IMPs on this board to lose the match by 7."
