Against a no trump contract, the GIB makes an opening lead from a 3 card suit which is headed by a jack. He has a 5 card suit headed by a king but he does not lead it. The 5 card suit has not been bid by the opponents. This seems to be a very poor defense play.

GIB doesn't play by human rules like returning the suit led or leading your longest and strongest. Because of the way it's built it tends to prefer passive leads over active leads. In this case it blew two overtricks, but that's not always the case.

North figures you have about 13 points, since E/W didn't investigate game. If you had 4 spades with your 13 points, you would have doubled 1♥, so North is trying to find your strength.

North may have figured that as his hand was weak and entryless there was a reduced likelihood that he would get to enjoy his Spades, so prospects were more promising to find partner's length. It guessed wrong on this occasion, but that does not invalidate the rationale. It is true that robots tend to do this more often than most humans. Still not sure in my own mind whether it gains in the long run.

GIB for sure didn't do this. it ran simulated hands based on the bidding. Now maybe the simulation showed a ♠ lead doesn't get many tricks. now the reason the simulation would come to this conclusion is basically your logic but don't for a second think GIB thought this way
If it does anything consistently it makes a safe lead.
