When I started playing bridge I remember some people alerting the bidding of a suit to ask for a stopper as 'California'. I thought it was pretty funny. I also remember some people arguing that such a bid was asking for half-a-stopper in some occasions. Is there any difference? Can both (asking for a stopper or half a stopper) be played? When or how can you tell them apart?

This discusses the question, though you may end up with less clarity than you started with.
