Strong enough to start with double. As for my next turn, who knows what the future holds? I might choose to bid diamonds, hearts, NT, pass, or double, depending on what else has happened.

1N looks clear to me, although its a bit heavy. Only alternative is double+ 2N.

I voted Other since I am not planning to rebid diamonds after doubling. The hand is too good for an immediate 1NT imho.

Of course, if it happened as described in the OP my Other would be a TD call instead!

Call the director! "Bid out of turn!"
You must know the rules well - so that you may break them wisely!

Sort of a funny shape for it, but, a balancing 2NT is a possibility you did not offer as a choice.

The J though, is poorly placed, which might push me toward a double first instead.

We are all assuming LHO is RHO but this is another possibility. Perhaps we should wait until the OP clears it up.

come on, it is obvious that "LHO" is meant as "partner's LHO", i.e. our RHO. You all understand that.

On the plus side, there are exactly 13 cards in the hand which is a good first step. Never A.S.S.U.M.E anything

I like doubling and bidding a suit to be a 6-carder (if less than 19 pts) so I voted 2, yes I'm max for this bid.
if you double and partner bid 2 are you gonna bid 3 and possibly miss out on a 5-3 fit.
there aren't a lot of points left in the deck for partner, but if the can make a response you will be better placed.
if they raise you can go for NT, if they bid 2 youll know they are 5+.

The username huangyizhe sounds like it may be Chinese. Am I right in thinking mahjong is played anticlockwise? Perhaps bridge is, as well?

It is worse than this - in mahjong South sits to the right of East so the order is still E-S-W-N despite the turns going anti-clockwise.
