I don't strongly object to North bidding in the hope that I can guard the Hearts. But why change its mind midstream? If it is going to assume that I have a Heart guard, AND that such a guard is sufficient to make 3N a good proposition, why would it earlier in the auction elect to play in 3D?
Perhaps 3N was intended as a sacrifice? Sacrificing in NT against a partscore should be low in the list of priorities for GIB programming, I suggest. As the Clubs break 3-3 it is actually a good sacrifice against 4H. Not so good against 3H+1 mind. Do we all agree with West's bidding?
