Love all at matchpoints. Partner's 1D opening promised 4 (5 card majors and 1C can be 2 if 4432), and you open 1D with 4-4 in the minors. Do you throw this one in or act again?

edit: before anyone asks, double from partner would be penalty orientated.

I'd bid 2D. I can't see defending this being very profitable.

I double for takeout if it is, ie sitting under the NT. If partner bids ♣ I convert to ♦ and hence imply ♥. Don't fancy defending.

I can't imagine that many would play this double as takeout.

Why can't you hold a 10 or 11 count, relatively balanced? Kxxx Qxx Qx A10xx as one easy example. Was partner supposed to make a penalty double with his bland 13 count?

This notion about being under the notrump bidder makes no sense....it is nonsense....because partner, who opened the bidding and notionally rates to have the stronger of the defending hands, is over the notrumper.

In addition, if we do have our 10 or 11 hcp, 'under' and 'over' are not as important concepts as they usually are since dummy will have no high card entries.

As for what I would do, I think I would bid 2♦ simply because with this hand and a likely spade lead from partner, we rate to be -120 or so, and it should be difficult for the opps to double us.

Very good points, Mike, and I am sure many would say double is penalty. However, I do have a partner who likes things very simple, and won't countenance nuances depending on the circumstances. We have a meta-rule that a double underneath the opponent's bid is takeout. This is very useful in many circumstances, and probably occurs more often played that way than as penalty. This hand is an example.

love all match points I would find a bid. Depending on your minor openings 2♦ or 2♥, I prefer the moysan where I ruff clubs but a diamond lead could really destroy dummy.

after having made a lead-misdirecting 1♠ bid I better try to avoid defending.

I prefer 2♥ as the 1nt bidder is a slight favorite to own 4 diamonds as opposed to 4 spades if pard has to correct to 2♠ and pard with the most likely weak notrump type of hand could easily be 4-4 in the reds.

If I propel us to a 3♦ contract partner will have a stiff spade and something like 5-4 in the minors which should play decently. I would bid it at imps too on helen_t's reasoning.
