Spades are trumps and south is on lead.

In the first diagram we need north to pitch and when in with the ♠A another heart promotes a trump for north.

In the second diagram we need north to ruff promoting a trump with our ♠Q.

Is there a signal with your hearts to compel partner to ruff or not ruff in this situation.

typicaly low asks for ruff and high for no ruff, this is consistent for when opponents have a middle card on the suit somewhere.
