Spades are trumps and south is on lead.

In the first diagram we need north to pitch and when in with the A another heart promotes a trump for north.

In the second diagram we need north to ruff promoting a trump with our Q.

Is there a signal with your hearts to compel partner to ruff or not ruff in this situation.

I think that a small one says "I want you to uppercut", and a high one says "I want you to discard".

This is an extension of what you do when leading a suit where dummy has a potential winner. eg You (South) have KQx, dummy (West) has J10, and the other two players are known to be out of the suit. To force an uppercut you lead a low one; to ask partner to discard you lead the king.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

What gnasher said.

(This is unsurprising given we had an email discussion about almost exactly this situation a few months ago, and we agreed then)

It gets harder when you don't know whether you want partner to ruff or not, it depends on the trump position.

These problems are generally harder at matchpoints. At imps you can (sometimes) simply play on the basis you are trying to beat the contract e.g. on the sample hand, North can place the ace of trumps depending on the trick target.
