IMPs.

Partner shows a balanced 18-19 HCP and, opposite your bid showing 4 diamonds, 5 clubs and heart shortage, bids 3NT. Have you said your piece?

I would have preferred to show my limit raise values for C rather than get in this D suit. Now I need to consider if 5C is a safer spot than 3N in spite of some wasted H values, and I have an additional trump. Frankly I am not happy passing, and not so happy bidding but mark me down for 5C.

Pass = 10, 5 = 7, stabbing myself in the eye = 6.

I really think any removal gets zero, but I am marking a la Guthrie.

Looks pretty Fantunes-ish, although not exactly the version in the book I have.

If playing a standard system then I'd agree, but this partner opens 1 with any balanced 18-19 and so may have five diamonds with two clubs. Even in this system I did have the option of showing 6 clubs with heart shortage but chose to bring both suits into play, rightly or wrongly.

Pass of course, we have described our hand enough that this can't be that close. It would be a shame to not take advantage of our great system on this hand.

There are hands where it's wrong to pass, but not many of them, and a lot more where it's fatal to bid, I think you have to pass.

agree with roger. i don't see the point in playing all this kit if you're going to bid on once you've shown this much of your hand.

Since partner will often be 4=4=3=2 or 3=4=3=3, and there is nothing about our hand that isn't within the description we have given, even thinking about bidding is an overbid. If we belong in clubs, that's on partner (or our methods), not me.

I also think pass is obvious.
We had a similar(ish) auction

1C (could be any 18-19 bal) - 2C (inverted)
2NT (strong) - 3H (shortage)
3NT - pass without much additional cogitation

OUr opponents at the other table tried to have the same auction i.e. 1C - 3H splinter but opener thought 3H was natural

Pass -- 3 has already conveyed a very good approximation of this hand.

Well that's me told as I bid on. It does look pretty silly now :(

Ten tricks were the limit in notrump and clubs. You would make fewer in hearts!
