Basic system: Precision with 11 - 13 NT, 1 can be a doubleton if 14 - 16 balanced.

You open 1* , LHO bids 1, two passes back to you. Any action?

Probably not, right?

So now you still play 11 - 13 NT but now you play standard 5-card majors. How much more would you need to bid with this hand type?

Where have the spades gone? I think the board belongs to the opponents but they would rather play spades than hearts. (I assume 1 from RHO would be forcing).

1NT, always. Many players will just open this hand 1NT, so why not go with the field?

My action would depend from the agreements with p.
Can he bid a negative free bid ?
Do we use 1NT/2C as transfers ?

How light can his negative doubles be ?
Etc etc.

All in all, I am up for 1NT: if we are taught to balance 1NT with 11 hcp (some people even less) when bidding goes 1H-pass-pass-?, I believe it will be hardly wrong to rebid on this hand.

i agree with mauro.. partner couln't neg x, he couldn't (or wouldn't) bid spades... rho showed weakness, so i'll give lho a max of 15, pard and rho 5 each... however, i think partner has 5 hearts over there... so i have to decide what he'd do if i double... will he leave it in? will he bid the 1nt?

my only bids are 1nt and double (i doubt i'd pass)... i think i'll double and bid 1nt over 1s, passing anything else...

I think you're supposed to pass these hands (in theory) playing a weak NT, although I've often wondered this myself. Playing a strong club, 1N I suppose should show the balanced 14-16; so the real question is if its a sound bid.

But playing 2/1 with a 12-14 NT as I do, 1N here should be 18-19. I think if I have the balanced 15-17 I'm supposed to pass, (unless I double, or rebid diamonds, or whatever).

Double is probably safe playing 2/1 or a strong club, as a conversion to NT should show the 15-17 hand. But this hand gets ugly if I double and LHO competes to 2 and pard takes a 2 call playing me for length.

that's true, phil... then you have a choice between 2nt and pass... but i don't believe pard is busted over there, and i think if lho bid 2, pard doubles.. maybe not tho
