The 2♦ opener was a multi indicating a weak 6 card major or possibly a strong minor suited hand. The double was said to show general values. Your bid as East?

I may go with 2S / 3S, assuming this showes a heart fit.
I am not 100% sure I want to commit myself to the 4 level, so it is rather 2S than 3S.
With kind regards
Marlowe

3♥. We could put more pressure on them at the vulnerability by bidding four hearts but partner may have stretched already and it will be hard enough for them to act over 3♥ when they don't have spades.
You can also bid 2♠ sometimes with this sort of hand because opponents could convince themselves they must have a spade fit after partner corrects to hearts. But we have too many spades for that to be likely to work here.

Opposite an usual weak two white/red first hand, they are somewhere between 5 and 7 clubs.....
3 ♥ will leave them too much space to find it out.

The best chance of messing with their hand is
4d
This can help in many ways.
1. They may x and get themselves off on the wrong foot
2. If this is a splinter all the better they may play the hand
incorrectly as a result.
3. It takes clubs out of the picture just as easily as 4h but
the opps do not have the luxury of the simple x they had
if we had bid 4h to show the other suits.
4. If they really mess up and leave us in 4d I am pretty sure
we won't mind going -500 in place of their vulnerable
game/slam.
5. This takes advantage of the vulnerability as we can't bid
this way at any other color set up.
6. Note that we do not want to supply the opps with any good intel
and we would avoid bidding 4c our actual singleton. Let them try
to figure out what we are doing.

Partner bid 4♥which was passed out for -100. At the post mortem I said to partner that I would have bid 3♥but didn't think that 4♥was wrong. Our team mates were in 3NT-1 (South) which looks like it should make with careful play. I suspect that a 3♥ bid would not have deterred South from bidding 3NT, so 4♥undoubled from that POV was successful.
The exotic bid of 4♦looks interesting. When opps ask the meaning I would have to tell them "undiscussed" What would happen next is anyones guess. If partner bids 2/3♠ I would automatically assume that he did not have a spade suit. I am not sure how this would affect subsequent actions or explanations.

The most commmon meaning for a 4♦ response to a multi is for Opener to simply bid their major at the 4 level. An alternative that one sometimes sees, especially in a weak/strong multi, is for 4♦ to show 5+ spades and willingness to play in 4 of either major. The theory there is that this makes it easier for Opener to judge what to do when holding the strong hand and also can be a prelude for a 5/6/7 level spade sac. That seems to make 4♦ pretty good in either case. The problem with the 4♥ response is that many pairs play it as natural.
