with an unlimited opp to your left and an unlimited p still to
speak it would be unwise to enter the fray here with essentially
a balanced minimum opening hand

pass

If you pass, partner bids 4♥.

1. Pass. Why do I want to get involved with a weak NT and no trick source?

2. Weird. I wasn't expecting this at all. I hate my ♠K. Meh pass.

Pass. Easy decision. All bids are worth 0.

So, my sane partner bid 4 ♥ on queen high? Really weird. I think he needs a spade shortage, so I would make a slam try with 4 NT.
Kind Regards

I still pass. If partner has, say, 1633 shape, he doesn't need much in high card to balanced 4♥, and 5♥ isn't safe opposite x Qxxxxx AQx Axx. If I were to make a slam try, it would be 5♥, and I don't even begin to understand any other bid.

It depends on how you define "safe". If what you meant was %100 safe, obviously it isn't.

You see this as "not safe 5♥", someone else may say it is %50 slam. (Regardless of who holds the ♠ A) You will know how to play spades if the lead is ♠ Q

I wish all my 5 level contracts were as safe as this one.

This was really an ATB or "we are a perfect match" :)

The auction and hands..

This is perhaps a matter of agreement. It seems clear that South intended 5♥ as a quantitative try and North interpreted 5♥ as asking for a spade control.

Oops, I somehow put the preemptor on my left when I wrote this post.

But in any case, to make slam better than on a finesse, partner (with 1633 shape) will need 4 cards out of the following 5 cards: ♠A, ♦AKQ, ♣A. In my view, he just needs 3 out of these 5 to bid (and sometimes just 2, as shown by the actual deal), and a priori he is much much more likely to have 3 out of 5 than 4 out of 5. So I think the odds are REALLY against slam being good.

I would have interpreted 5♥ as 'bid 6 if your trumps are solid', is this the standard meaning?
This is not a hand I played but I do know NS do not have extensive slam agreements.

I was not suggesting to make a move, though i think it is close decision and depends on behaviors of your pd. For example if pd is "The Hog" , i am just blasting slam w/o inviting Posted Image

6H is pushing it too far, but I'm not sure I like 5H either. Can we not ask for aces to avoid this problem?

Yes, but it fails to avoid the other possible problem of xx, Qxxxxx, AK, AQx, losing the ♠A and a ruff.

We would conveniently bid 6NT when it is right and 6♥ when it is right :P

Too bad RKC is out of fashion ... you could stop at 5H missing 2 key cards . ( I see ahydra asked about using RKC ) .
