Scoring: IMP

West North East South

 -     -     -     2!
 Pass  4    Pass  Pass
 Dbl   Pass  5    Dbl
 5    Dbl   Pass  Pass
 6    Pass  6    Dbl

Question 2 can you guess how many we went down by?

The 2 spades was alerted as strong

Well, you don't even have a t/o dbl on a 1 opening so it is pretty dangerous to dbl at the 4th level, isn't it :)

By the way, your dbl can only be penalty and you don't have it !

I would add that it would be good to change your partner if he removes those kind of double :) :)

Anyway, what went wrong:
After not having doubled 2 for takeout west's double must be interpreted as a penalty double so east should pass it. In fact 4 can be defeated if east returns a club rather than a diamond (this is hard!).
Nevertheless, west should not have doubled 4. Also correcting 5 to 6 does not seem very smart. Did he really think the doubling would stop?

My guess is down 7. Am I right?

West's Dbl is penalty (but he doesn't hold a penalty hand)! East has an Ace, so he should pass for sure. So West started the problems, and East made them worse, and West finished them with his ridiculous RDbl...

well both made lots of mistakes
D=mistake
5D= mistake
5H= mistake
6D/6H=hard to judge those
redouble= come one are you serious
Id say west mistakes were more silly, east's are understandable.

I don't find a lot of humor in the whole matter myself. There are funny bridge hands; this one is more pathetic than anything else.

So where do you want to start? 2, whether it be weak strong or Acol (looks like the latter to me) just looks like one of those random bids you see online. Same with 4, although NS are clearly on the same page. Undisturbed, this is the normal contract, probably down but makes on a misdefense.

The double of 4, is well, odd. Maybe you feel they are stealing from you, maybe pard hitched over 4; it doesn't matter. Just pass.

The pull to 5 is ill judged too. 5 is too strange for words, as is 6. And the redouble?

On behalf of the BBO community, I'd like to thank you for creating another wild, non-field result. I'm guessing the other pairs that played 4 -1 on sensible defense are all probably getting 3 or 4 IMPs, instead of losing 2.

Who cares how many you went down?

Terrible bidding all round!

South is a trick or so short of a 2 opening.

North should raise to 3 (it is generally wrong to raise straight to game with an Ace) so the best contract of 3NT is reached.

West has no reason to double 4 (he has only 2 certain tricks).

East shouldn't take out the penalty double with an Ace. He certainly shouldn't sacrifice at this vulnerability unless he thinks there is a chance of only being one off.

West's 5 was ill thought out if he planned to revert to 6

West's 6 is ridiculous once 5 has been doubled for penalties.

West's redouble is ... Help! I've run out of non-insulting adjectives.

Playing an online tourney one has to take a risk once in a while to get an extra IMP or two. Dbl is clearly penalty, but West is a little weak, but
Opps jump to 4 could be a weak game try. The risk is minimal opps get 590 instead of 420. not too expencive, but when they fall, we get a few extra against those playing 3 or falling in 4 without dbl.

West dbl is a optimistic taktical bid.
Now East takes it as takeout, ***** happens.....
5 / 6 / 6 i won't say what i think of these bids, so Ben won't have to remove my comment.
redbl deserves an report to abuse@...., this is clearly punishing partner and ruin everybody elses score.

yes, as most have said the double of 4s should be for penalty... whew what a mess... a general rule to remember is, if someone has a chance to double a suit for takeout and doesn't, then later doubles that same suit, it's for penalties... i'm sure there are exceptions, but i don't know what they are

I don't think 4 is beateable, first of all you won't normally lead a with a trump trick.
