I got dealt possibly the best hand I've ever received today and was wondering how the bidding should go

What do you bid and how many?

NB This was the very first board playing with a pick up partner where system discussion went as far as basic ACOL with 3 weak 2's (not my first choice of system :) )

Do you not think your hand is going to mesh well with partners? He probably doesnt have much in hearts and you really dont need much to make 6N!

Partner is limited to a bad 8.
I'll bid 3, then if partner bids:
3 I bid 3N;
4 I bid 4N RKB;
4 I bid 6;
4 I pass.

If partner bids 3N or 4 i'll still be thinking about what to do.....any ideas?

Great bid! Your partner happened to have a 2-5-3-3 shape and bid 5C on xxx

By the way I am just bidding 3NT and will do next in the next 50 yrs when I pick up a similar hand.

Unless you have some special agreement that 4 denies values then i think that after a jump to 4 you will be a favourite to make a slam.

Good thought Wayne. You might be right.
I expect partner to jump to 4 on weak hands, essentially showing little more than length, and bid 3{spades] then 4 (over 3N) on top of range (8) - though I might be misappropriating fast arrival here.

Well yes since over 3 sometimes partner really may have nothing with only four spades. Indeed even a 3=4=3=3 yarborough is possible. What do you expect partner to do with this?

Anybody fancy taking 1400 out of 2 with the E hand :)

I don't think you can get to 6 which appears to be the slam that might make although not sure it does on a club lead.

6N is an abomination as you can't get to dummy unless partner has J or a club honour.

I would bid:

(2)-X-2-3-3N-4-4-4N-5-5-5-P I suspect.

Partner has 5 spades not including the Q and a heart stop.

have a look at the spoiler in the OP

According to the hand records the only slam that makes is 6!S by W. Of course the best result is passing 2Hx which one table did for -6 and 15.6 imps. Even 3N was worth 7.2 with lots of people going off in slams. 3/16 pairs even played in grand :D

By my meta-rules I can jump to 4NT over 2 - quantitive, and that's what I will do.

Similarly, doubling a 3-level preempt and then bidding 4NT is natural. There are other ways to agree partner's suit and ask for aces, but no other way to show a balanced powerhouse.

The opponents are more likely to be extremely aggressive in third seat white versus red. 2 can be bid on almost anything. (In the US, the ACBL has a 5 and 5 criteria -- weak 2s have to promise at least 5 cards in the suit bid and 5 points.)

I think 3 is right -- generally following what Steve Moe suggested.

After 3 , I think 3 by partner is an all purpose sign off bid that partner can make with any bad hand. You can then bid 3 NT which should make as long as nobody else holds 5+ s.

After a 3 NT call over 3 , I'm really torn between bidding 4 NT inviting 6, or just bidding 6. I'd probably go with just inviting with 4 NT because of potential transport problems to partner's hand.

After 4 over 3 , I'd bid 5 .

That's not true about the ACBL. You can open weak 2s with less than 5 points. You are not allowed to play conventional responses if you have less than 5 cards in the suit (by agreement) or a range larger than 7 HCP (but the range could be 0-6 HCP) [also technically the GCC says AND not OR about the 5 card suit and the 7 hcp range, but I think either one makes it bad, not both] but if you are willing to not have conventional responses you can open 0 HCP 4 card weak 2 in the major (and technically, I suppose, 3 card weak 2 in the minors). I know a number of people who play ranges less than 5 points (like 4-10 or 3-9). I don't know many who play less than 5 cards (at least weak, I know some who play 4 cards and 10-15).

I was once told off (Germany) for opening a third seat white against red 2 with AKQxx and out. I daresay I would have received a fine if I had tried it with J8765.
