Bridge World double

Do you find Double confusing as a bid?

So does the December 2012 Bridge World

----

Carol Sanders a wonderful player passed on....

Can you explain to a Bridge World non-subscriber?
- I thought "double" was not a bid
- Carol is deceased, or failed to bid?

Yeah, mike777. I agree with the BW this time. I think language has failed to keep up with meaning. They have a point - standard terms no longer reflect what meanings are in context. This makes describing agreements and treatments less than clear. I also think the Takeout, Cooperative-Takeout, Cooperative-Penalty, Penalty classifications proposed are a step in the right direction.

How many doubles can you name?

Penalty, takeout, cooperative, cards/Balance of Power, responsive,

maximal, negative, rose, thrump, positive, stripe-tailed ape, support, Lightener, bust(negative response to partner's 2 opener), invitational (5-7 HCP after partner's precision 1), lead directing, Ace showing, Rosenkranz, Snapdragon, unbid suit lead request (double of a splinter), find my ace partner, matchpoint, speculative, slam, ...

Just clearing up how we talk about the first 5 on that list makes sense to me...

Hard to say as the comment in the OP makes no grammatical sense.

Back in the day Edgar often commented on most of these as the "ubiquitous" double. Since I don't know what that means I call them a transfer of responsibility designed to win the post-mortem.

Inadmissible, out of turn, Watson, transfer, DOPI, showing a half-stop, suggesting a sacrifice, Stayman (ok this is a form of Stolen Bid), Negative/Positive Slam. The list is almost endless!

I read my editorial last night, and I think this is a much-needed move.

Cooperative-takeout is my favorite. There are many situations where we double in a low level auction that is takeout by definition, but we would love it if partner passed. These are generally in no fit auctions, or auctions where we both know partner cannot have a huge stack.

This is different from a 'pure' takeout double that could contain a void.

I think an important category that isn't included are the balance-of-power, or ownership doubles.

Is this maybe an American thing? Something to do with the annual Rose Bowl? Any team that has won the Rose Bowl back to back in two consecutive years is known as the Rose Double? :P

Phil, I am pretty sure that Cooperative Penalty and Cooperative Take-out are both forms of BoP doubles - Colchamiro talks about how context frames penalty and takeout BoP interpretations.
