Lucky you can 'always' vote "other" :)

4, not strong enough for slam imo...

4H. Pard would stretch to bid 3 (and 4) hearts in this situation.

4H? too chicken. All the Aces and Queens are so precious. I voted for 5C. 4NT might be a little too aggressive.

Good hand, but doubleton d is ur weakness. perhaps conservative is better here. you need pd to have sak and hak to make it, as h finesse seems due to fail.

about 26 combined HCP, we belong to game.

The hand we need for slam (a 5-5 with 4/5 keycards) is nearly impossible, partner would bid 4 with AKAK, and probably with AKKK unless the minor K was bare...

I am alone, too, with my 5C. Don't be sad.

I'm alone with my actual call at the table; 4N. Pard seemed marked with a diamond stiff and a non-minimum.

Pard actually held: AJ9xx, Axxx, Kx, Jx. Slam had no play on the K lead (or no other lead for that matter  )

I wouldn't have thought that partner would bid 3 over 3 with a minimum hand. I would have thought that a dead minimum passes and waits for partner's balance.

But judging from the other posters - most of whom I hold in high regard :) , I was clearly out to lunch on this one.

Perhaps maximal doubles should be sensibly played here. After all, I can't see pard blasting to 4 on a hand like: AJxxx, AKxx, x, Kxx. Note that 6 is excellent on this hand.

1. Pd is more likely to have doulbeton rather than singleton.
2. I think pd is correct to compete with 3H. With the better hand you gave, I would also bid 4H. Contested auction is so different from uncontested auction. You are fighting for partscore most of time, game is unusual, slam is exceptional. I wouldnot mind missing that slam.

hey phil, for the hell of it how would 4d doubled have done? this is matchpoints, and i'm a big believer in cooperative doubles especially with this scoring

assume 17 or 18 total trumps...with zero or minus one adjustments.
very close between 4h and double.

If we guess 17.5 total trumps and .5 minus adjustment then double is the call. but that is two assumptions.
