Had this hand...was very last board in sectional swiss against opponents that are weak, uninspired players.

you get to 3N (your pard should have bid 4S with a long extremely strong suit and no entry but thats irrelevant now).

club king is led, what is your plan.

drop club jack at normal speed. Then hope to keep EAST off the lead in red suits the best I can.. should WEST not lead another club for me.

Yes the J is my first reaction too.

I think the play has a lot of technical merit. If LHO has Hxx of hearts and Kx or Kxx of diamonds, he'll have a tough time at T2.

If LHO returns a heart honor at T2 the hand becomes very interesting.

Wow I jsut palyed a very very similar hand this weekend, with AKQJ10xx this time, and also I played in 3NT opposite a 4054 wich an only possible entry being 10xx :), this time it was opposite KQJx, but opponents did the good defence and dummy only made the last trick :-/.

Well if they are really clueless.. win the ace and return the jack.. but we assume he didn't meant unispired to be total idiots... The cute play probably comes later in teh hand with a red suit throw-in after WEST (uninspired) fails to lead K from heart Kxx or KTx....... or not only fails that, but also fails to unblock in hearts and or diamonds.... something like that. Hence the plan your play.. it is more than just the JAck.

dropping the club jack is what i did at the table, i think it was wrong technically but i didnt have time to think about this since as ben said, you must do it in normal tempo. I was sure these particiular opps would continue clubs anyways.

I don't really see a reason why to drop the J. You give away a trick (normally) and I think you can manage to almost reach 9 tricks without the s :P But ok, if you know they'll fall for it, why not :D

I dunno, I'm overthinking the hand again...
Boy, I know what I'd do if the jack and ten of clubs were reversed.

The key is to have West on lead. East going through your suits suits looks painful.

So, you take the first club with the ace. Ace and another diamond. East is on lead. He leads a club, understandably. You go up with the jack. Hopefully uninspired boy goes up and your worries are over. No such luck. Now the jack of diamonds...is everybody out? Yes? Good. Two more diamonds, sluffing two of the little spades. Now I play a heart to the jack.

West takes this, and takes two club tricks, but that's only a total of 4. Whatever he leads next gives me the rest of the tricks. Or East takes this, and leads a club. If he leads a heart I have to guess it.

Boy, am I counting on a lot of things breaking well. There must be a better way.

So, I duck the first club (playing the jack) and the next club is a small one (partner could have Ax). You have to take it with the ten, and then play four spades, discarding...what? Hearts, I guess. Then you take the diamond finesse. If it fails, they knock out the club ace. But it's too late. They got 1 club, 1 diamond, you get 4 spades, 1 heart, 2 clubs, 2 diamonds. The last two tricks are yours if the diamonds split, theirs if they don't.

OK, so they're feeling inspired. You duck the first club, playing the jack. They switch to hearts. Heart honor by East is taken by your ace, and then you lead a heart back to the jack. Gets taken by West (split honors), and he's even more stuck. Maybe instead they switch to diamonds on trick 2. You win, and lead a low heart. If West wins, he's as trapped as before. If East wins, he can knock out the club ace (duck once). Now your only hope is that if West has a heart honor that it's Hx. So you play the ace of hearts. If the honor drops, you're fine. If it doesn't and East has it, you're still fine- thrown him in with that last heart honor and he's forced to lead back a diamond or a spade, making your contract for you (you hope).

OK, I'm convinced. Club jack is the way to go. I just had to work out what you guys could see in seconds.

I think you are right, if i take the A and play the Q of there are good chances to make the game anyway, iclulding chances of west playing club Q or small, which isnt that a bid mistake (knowing about A at partner's hand is much easier then knowing about J) and giving us the entry to the table.
