I think you are allowed to play whatever you want to play against an artificial bid, I can recall a couple of anecdotes form the European Junior championships.
The first happened when a pair (I donīt recall wich) was playing a highly artificial ovrcalls over 1♣ artificial openings, and their opponents were playing 1♦ opening as 4th, wich makes 1♣ artificial (may be 2 cards when 4432), so they just switched their system methids for 4432 openings and made 1♣ opening natural for that match, so they couldnīt use the artificial overcalls (they become ilegal against non artificial openings).
The other was this year, the middle of the championships had passed, and lookign at convention cards you could see less than half were playing best minor openings.
We faced Italy, playing against DiBello brothers, I canīt explain with words their happy reaction when they found we were playing best minor, and didnīt had to play those artificial overcalls against us.

I play 1♣ as 2+ cards. We only met one pair that played something special against it, the two Italian brothers you already mentioned. Our defence to that system was: 'If you can find something else to open, do so. Otherwise treat as natural'.
The reaction of Furio & Stelio does not surprise me. I think it's a mixed blessing playing the system they play. It seems to have been put in from higher up (the trainer tells them what system to play). I will keep my semi-natural 1♣ opening thank you very much
Meanwhile I play NF Suction against that. (1♣) 2♣ is either natural or both reds, etc.

About the nuts defences against strong clubs I once developed a funny one, but it never happened so I canīt tel you if it is good:
Based on DONT overcalls anythign at the 2 level is a 2 suiter promising the higher suit.
The funny thing is with 1 suiters:
You use 1NT for 1 suiters and so you have a scaping method that may scape on a suit you have better fit:
1♣-1NT-X-ps
ps-2♣
2♣ is I have ♣ or not, it is not alerted as a maybe psyche, but as a most probable psyche, so on, ýou will escape to 2♦ if you get doubled, therefore testing if opponents are able to double all of the previous suits before landing on the good one.
