I have a hard time believing 3D is a +EV call in the long run.

Preempt in opener's suit!?!?

Keep in mind that it assumes you bid exactly how it does. Therefore, it sees you as only having 3+ ♦, and probably assumes you don't have many, given how many it has. And then it probably just assumes you'll have some major fit and make a game in one of the major suits easily, so it probably doesn't have much to lose. You may notice that when it does go down as much as it did, then you may even miss a slam, and 6 ♠ is possible to make with your hands, which is worth about as much. In any of the cases where your team has game, slam, or grand slam, it still doesn't see its preempt going down as all that significant of a loss as compared to letting you find the right bid with your hands, but if it causes you to bid the wrong thing, it could be a huge gain for it.

So you think this 3D is a winning bid in the long run? Nothing you have said has really convinced me that the bid isn't awful.

you are not happy with +1400 lol. That is just an aggressive bid.
I typically don't post just to complain about bad results. IMO this is a shortcoming in GIB that could easily be fixed by the developers. Since I seem to be in the minority in thinking this, I guess they'll leave things as they are

Its a bad bid because GIB's hand is short on quality- it shouldn't be making aggressive preempts of openers suit but more moderate ones like at least KJ10xxxx could be OK- of course KQJxxxx is even better.

It should be *allowed* to preempt in opener's minor suit. I don't think there's a lot of debate about what the bid should *mean*, because you can already bid 2nt or double with the other two suits if you want to takeout. Given the # of bad 4 cd suits opener can have, it's OK to have this be a preempt.
It's just that it needs to have upgraded judgment on how good it has to be to do it. The hand has way too many flaws; 2-2-2 is a major flaw, the suit having tons of holes is a massive flaw, having opener behind you and after a response is a major flaw (1d-(3d) is generally a more common and effective preempt than overcalling in the sandwich position). Suit quality requirements for preempts in this type of position can't be as aggressive as they can be for opening preempts.

Maybe my topic title was too dramatic--I agree that GIB should be able to bid 3D as a preempt here, but just not on a hand like this.
