I would pass. Do most people play X of 5 of a minor to be straight penalty, takeout, or optional? I would assume without discussion that I'd need way more distribution to bid here.

Ok, yes...pass would have been better. Partner had 3 aces and out. 5 would have made (as the 5 bidder had a void and a 4 loser hand), but 5X= is better than 1400.
