Hi all,
If the auction has proceeded as below:
1D P 1S P
2D P P X
What would be a sensible meaning for this double, and what kind of hand should it show? (Point range, suit count etc)
Thanks!

3-4 hearts 4-5 clubs and 8-10 hcp or opening hand with a spade stack and tolerance for the hearts and clubs. Either way a desire not to play 2d.

Takeout, which was unsuitable for a t/o double on the previous round because of imperfect shape (like 4324 or even 5314) or because too weak (4414 9 points..)

Yes. Probably takeout, definitely a hand which did not want to act over the 1♠response; and most likely a bad idea.
This is not an auction where the opponents are guaranteed to have a fit, but it is a situation where many people turn a good or average result into a bad one by getting involved after the auction should have been over.
