3NT doubled should had lost 7 IMPs to 4 doubled at the other table, but a defensive mistake let it tie the board. Who is to blame?

I though for a long time it was Analyse the Board :P, but then I found I was wrong and it means "Assing the blame"

The whole auction looks ludicrous

I don't understand a preemptive style in which you're opening crappy two counts with a 5 card suit

1. These hands are incredible rare. Why burden your system by increasing the range of your opening bids to account for this sort of crap.
2. What does 3H mean? Is south actually preempting with a defensively oriented 18 count? If so, I can only assume that this is some kind of tactical bid.
3. Once East has shown big hand, declaring 4 seems questionable at best. The 3 bid seems to have worked and I'd be more than happy to double 3N.

How do you know what opener holds?

Less so if you get the compass points correct.

URK

I thought that the 2 opener had the West hand and the doubler had the East hand.
(Hence my confusion about the auction)
Thanks for the correction.

I think that I prefer 2NT to double, however, I still don't think I'm getting to 4.

Of the bids, I think that I dislike 3NT the most.
I think that this can really misfire badly.

West has a tough choice. I suspect that the hand is worth a lot more in Spades than in NT.
Even so, pulling 3N to 4 seems unilateral.

West is not involved, here. Bidding 4S would have been ludicrous. Why? because West knows his RHO most likely has four spades from the 3H (pass or correct) call and has no particular reason to think partner even has 3 of them.

East, OTOH, is not as well-placed. His hand is much better than the hand on the other thread (balancing decision/3c), and it is hard to pass out 3H; but East still does not have a great potential source of tricks, and anything needed to be onside won't be. Plus, he might not get to dummy anyway!

Blame is clear. East did the deciding; and however reasonable, it was wrong this time and might be wrong over the long run.

If 3NT had worked out, do we have an "Assess the Credit" for an action a lot of us would not have taken?

I prefer a 2nd double by East instead of 3nt and then West will bid 3 which may well end the auction. The hand was worth dbl followed by 2nt over a spade response but not 3nt over silence.

Too many quacks in East and no gaurantee that West has a 5-card suit.

I think West should convert to 4. East usually has a balanced hand for this sort of sequence, so 3NT will probably not have much chance whereas 4 might make even in a 5-2 fit.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

I agree that East is suggesting a balanced hand and would normally bid 3NT immediately over 2 holding a trick source plus stoppers. So West should normally convert with a five card suit. There is the issue that spades are probably not breaking given the 3 bid and your spade spots aren't great. But the 8 could come into its own and I still expect spades to play two tricks better than NT quite a lot more often than they make the same number.

I probably have 0 entries for partner to use in 3nt. I probably have 2 entries in 4s. My hand plays better in Spades, even if it's a 5-2 split. Yes I could be going for numbers but passing 3nt is not right with these cards.

Obv west, passing 3N X is lol. Partner did not overcall 3N, the point of the first X is to let you bid 4M if it's right.
