i passed 1nt.. let them guess, i've had worse defensive hands... the downside is i'd have to come in at 3d if i decided to balance, but i can't see it happening

You could try to buy it it 2♦, then compete with a X if they compete. That keeps open the option of playing in 3♦, but also the option of catching them for a penalty if eg partner is 4423.

If my partner doesn't have diamonds, we're going to have a hell of a time beating the 120 I expect to get at 1NT. If my partner does have diamonds, there's a small chance that the opponents will let us play it at 1NT but zero chance they'll let us play 2♦.

Here's the two auctions I'm expecting most:
1NT P P X
...P ?

1NT P 2C P
.2D P ..P X
...P ?

I think the first auction makes it much tougher for the opponents than the second one.

Your side has 22-24 points. No way they're going to balance a 2D bid. And if they do, so much the better. You (or pard) can either bid 3D or double them.

MP I pass. We have 22-24. No need to try game too hard in MP. Playing in D scores more only if you can make 4D and you can make only 1N. I pass.

Thanks all for participating. Just about what I figured; a close vote between pass and transfer. Echoed my schizoid thinking at the table. Inviting game is silly.

I transferred to 2♦. At this vulnerability, I was quietly hoping they'd balance with 2 of a major which I would saw off.

But: diamonds didn't break. Opponents banged down the AK♠ and ducked their A♥ later. +130 was a nice score. At least +120 is available is they don't find the club lead in NT. If they do, +90 is about the limit. If diamonds are splitting, obviously this hand makes +150 or +400.

At other tables the bidding started 1♠ - 1N - 2♦ - 3♦...now some passed and some probed for 3N which they played (-50 or -100).

I think the actual hand is an unusual layout. Give partner a more typical: KJxx, Axx, Kx, Qxxx, and diamonds is a big winner.

By the way, I think transferring to diamonds is absolutely clear at IMPs.
