If clubs are 2-2, I have 10 tricks all day (5 clubs, 1 heart + 2ruffs, 2 spades). If clubs are 3-1, I'd like the chance to set up diamonds for a spade pitch. Trick 2 should be to lead a diamond. Now I have three entries to dummy to ruff out diamonds, and the spade king to enter later to cash it. The key will also be to *not* pull more than one round of trump. I'll lose control on 3-1 break in that case, and don't mind if they score two club tricks.

Yes, WD Bunny. THe trap on the hand is ruffing hearts too early. The correct order of plays is:

1. ♥A
2. ♦K losing
3. Win ♣K shift
4-7. Ruff 2 ♦'s and 2 ♥'s.
8. Play the 4th ♦. At this point you are cold. Even if RHO follows and LHO overruffs, you are OK, since the 5th diamond is established which a spade goes on. At the table LHO actually had an odd double with a 2=4=4=3.

If you ruff hearts too early you can establish the diamond, but you can never reach it.

What if defense shifts to a ♠ when they win the ♦A ? If you win in dummy, you can ruff 2 ♦s and 2♥s ending in dummy. If you now try to ruff the 4th ♦ there're all kinds of complications. If you win the ♠ in hand trying to preserve a late ♠ entry to ♦s after they're established you'll find yourself an entry short in establishing them.

Its early, and my brain isnt completely engaged yet, but aren't you just transposing trick 3 (the club shift) with a late heart ruff or the spade to the board? What complications did you have in mind?

After ♦K win ♠ in hand, go to ♣ A, ruff ♦, ruff ♥, ruff another ♦, ruff ♥, ruff 3rd ♦, ♦ suit is established and ♠K still entry.

You're right, I had a blind spot that a ♠ switch removes one entry for ♦ ruffs, but it doesn't. It's the equivalent of defense switching to trumps which you can handle by winning in dummy.
