I blame East. Why would his/her double show 3 diamonds?

FYP, so that it answers its own question. West must have either 3 spades, 4 hearts, or five diamonds on the auction ---with a minimum opposite East's shown minimum he would probably not act over 3C with any of those. 3D by East, rather than double is simple yet eligant.

No blame. Why should anyone guess to bid 3D? From opener's point of view responder could very well be 5422. From responder's point of view opener could be 2344.

2-3-4-4 opens one club in my style, but regardless it seems the opps have nine clubs. Responder has a pass with 5-4-2-2.

I believe gonzalo opens 1D on 2344. Otherwise yeah, responder could draw the inference opener must have 5 diamonds.

Why does anyone have to draw any inferences other than the opps have a club fit? East should just show his hand by bidding 3D and let West place the contract.

Because it's not 100% sure our side has a fit. If East bids 3D and finds opener with 2344, he's gonna look silly.

According to my SAYC book its a 1♦ open.

Silly? Surely pd has played a 4-3 at some point in his life. If not, then it's time he tried it.

It's not silly to play the 4-3 fit, but it sure is to do it when opps were going for a set :)
