I think you missed the point... you are to find the defense that defeats any line declearer plays.

evidently he means that in addition to no way to make it, there's no way to allow it to be made

if east throws the deuce of spades on the first diamond, then it makes... outside of that i see no other way

If EAST throws a heart, it also makes. If East throws a club, it also makes, if East throws the spade JACK it also makes, so in fact, EAST has to discard at trick one the Spade 8, 6, or 4 or else it will make. Quite a small difference between he can't throw only the spade 2 or else it makes. But really, the first problem is more interesting than the second.

Ben

I don't see how east throwing a heart gives the contract.

I want to know ;)

I thought they were 2 different problems?

surely the cards look different to me on the 6 H contract

what do you discard on 3 times hearts?

i was confused on the hands also... but in the 6H one, trump the diamond lead, lead out the rest of your trumps and throw all the top spades, lead a club to the ace and lead your low spade toward the 9.. east has to win but he's endplayed... if he doesn't win the 10, you lose one spade at the end
