Double.

Edit: What if partner bids 5? I agree with Mbodell, that I think I'm passing.

I double. And if partner bids 5 I think I'm passing, at least if undoubled.

Neither bad bidding nor lucky bidding know boundaries, they are universal.

Agree -- finally I agree with Justin on something that we both consider obvious :)

Partner has short hearts and knows that the onus is on him to act (since we might be put in this spot). He couldn't act, so he's limited in values (if he's at the top of his range, game is still iffy, given that we're not particularly shapely). We have a nice hand to defend in 4H; I'm planning to win this one on defense.

I don't disagree with pass, but I find the logic to be totally off base.

I am staring at a 17 count. Yes, partner is short in hearts. But to put the onus of acting on partner in direct seat over a 4 level preempt with a likely 7-10 HCP is just too much.

If partner had doubled 4, what would you call with this hand? Surely not 4. So how do you get to game if game is the limit of the hand?

Again, I don't disagree with defending 4. But not because partner failed to act.

My point was that 7-10 (11?) is the upper end of partner's range, and even then we might be forced to 5D in a 4-4 fit -- if we even have a fit! I'm not excited about the prospect of trying to scrape together 11 tricks with this collection, especially given my shape.

Perhaps I could have explained myself better.

As an unpassed hand do we expect partner to bid with say, Kxx x AJxx QJxxx. or how about 10xxxx - Axxx Qxxx?

regardless of what the winning action was at the table, I was curious to see how many people are gonna pass white at MPs with this holding.

Of course not, but move one of those diamonds into the club suit and you get to play 5. Good luck with that.

Why do I get the feeling you didn't pass this?

I rarely tank over a bid, but I spent a solid 2 minutes staring at these cards before passing. Problem is, nobody opened the North hand 4H, so most were able to find our spade fit after the field's 3H opener.

We're going plus here. (I like plus scores at matchpoints.)

Partner will (almost always) pull if we double.

Partner will often pull to 5 in which case we'll usually go minus.

We will often go minus even if partner doesn't pull to 5.

I pass.

"I like plus scores at matchpoints."

This has always confused me - why are plus scores better at MP than IMP? I thought it applied to IMP's more, i.e. I am happy to take a + score at IMP's, be it +100, +120, +140, +150, 200, it's fine, but at MP +200 is awesome.
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.
