Why is this a penalty double? And what am I supposed to bid?

Why on earth is double now described as showing rebiddable spades? I thought GIB plays support doubles...

(In practice, I bid 3 and we got to a making 6 when GIB rebid 3, but it could have been easier.)

why not bid the hand like you were going to in an uncompetitive auction? surely 2NT has the same meaning except that you damn sure promised a stopper .

If, as you say GIB plays support DBL, then it should show 3 card support.

One possibility is, perhaps support X do not apply thru 2 or perhaps not versus pre-empts, doesn't make much sense to me, but it's the best I can come up with.

Most people only play support doubles if responder can rebid his suit on the 2 level. GIB presumably follows this style.

When is Lurpoa finally going to be banned from upvoting?

Anyway, I don't care if it's not a support double - I just don't want it to be a penalty double!

If it's not a support double, and you don't want it to be penalty, what do you think it should be? Takeout isn't necessary, since there's only one unbid suit; partner should balance if he has it.

What a narrow view of the word "takeout"! In my world, a takeout double would show the unbid suit (4+ D), some extra length in the suit I originally bid (4+ C) and tolerance for partner's suit (2-3 H).
