GIB chose not to open this hand first seat white vs. red, and I eventually scored a not very good 3♦+4, +190.

Personally, I think this is a 1♣ opener at any vulnerability or form of scoring.

It seems more likely that you can adapt to GiB than that it can adapt to you!

It shouldn't be a matter of adapting: GIB defines an opening 1♣ bid as "3+C; 11-21 HCP; 12-22 total points". North's hand should certainly be deemed to fit that description.
