Isn't it just a matter of playing the diamond and discarding a spade, then RHO with only hearts left allows you to discard another spade and ruff in dummy? Or have I miscounted?

Hopefully this won't be seen at first glance, but yes. It's a counting exercise. If spades are 3-2, playing the diamond throwing a spade would be very foolish . However counting RHO's hand, you know he has 2 clubs and 4 diamonds, and you "know" he has 6 hearts, therefore, it only leaves enough room for 1 spade, hence diamond throwing a spade makes the contract.
