Scoring: IMP

West North East South

Trick one... CJ C3 C4 CK
Trick two....SQ SA S3 S2

Yes, 3 is not everyones first choice. This is what I bid, so shoot me. You are PLAYING UDCA SIGNALS - so the club 4 is encouraging or perhaps count (but do you think it is count? not me).

GACK --- thanks Whereagles,,, dummy put in now...

Declarer seems to have a strong 4252 or 4162 (he should perhaps have won the lead with the club ace). Since he rates to have 10 trick by means of 5 diams, 3 spades and 2 clubs, I play back a small heart to try and shorten him.

I don't think declaerer has those 10 tricks - if partner has the heart Ace and King, he hardly would have encouraged clubs. That being said, I led a heart anyway since if declarer has a singleton Ace, partner holding H-Kxxx will have no reason to play the King when I lead low (I hope he doesn't play me for a tricky Qx!) and partner who we expect to get in more often can tap declarer twice. Singleton King of hearts works well too as I would expect to win SA, HA, HQ, partner's trump trick (or unfinessable diamond), or have declarer mercilessly tapped.

The problem with clubs is that partner can only tap declarer once. With proper timing, perhaps declarer can give partner a trick when dummy can still ruff clubs.
I tend to lead fourth best - as opposed to the best suit, the second best suit, or the third best suit for our side

I have to agree, it is hard to imagine partner with the heart AK and he encourage on the club opening lead. Since I don't know (from my own hand) how the defense should go I lazily relied on partner to be able to look at his own diamonds and figure out the best line of defense at trick one, so I returned a club without much thought.

This was a mistake, as you can see.. Partner had four spades (not surprising) to the JACK, and the heart AKx. So a low heart and three rounds of heart forces declearer to ruff, gaining a trump promotion for your partner's jack. They missed an easy 3NT, so impwise, you are not burned badly but you could have scored a ton with a heart back. In fact, it is the difference between third and first. Well done to the heart leaders.

Actually, declarer gave the whole show away by winning with the club king, which placed him with the ace as well. (The reason pard encouraged clubs is because he has the queen and doesn't know who has the king before declarer played it.)

But then again, pard misbid the hand :) A lead-directing 3H would have solved all defensive problems :)

Pd has length, and nothing in , so he must have cards.
I will play back to tap declarer.
The bidding is just horrible, just bid 4. You really think pd is going to pass with you holding AK of .
Horrible bridge....

I don't grasp this diagram. Have North/South been switched?

Unlike book problems, where SOUTH is always declearer. In BBF, "you" are always south. So here, the hand with Six Clubs is South, and the dummy to the left is WEST. This takes a while to get use too.
