T1: 5, Q, A, 4
T2: 9, 10, 9, 6
T3: K, 2, 4, A

T4?

Does it matter if LHO is a novice or a pro?

Most people would overcall with AJ98x and a side king, so it appears that LHO has both black kings. That's also supported by RHO's suit preference signal and LHO's 9. It makes LHO rather strong for 3, but he was facing a hand that couldn't overcall over 1, so he doesn't need to be disciplined.

If that's the layout, you can do anything except play a club to the ace and then take a spade finesse. I'd cash A, falling back on the club finesse.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

Thanks for the reply. Sorry I've been afk.

I guess this question is dumb at IMPs -- RHO can't really have both black kings and not overcall; even having 1 is conservative, so the spade ace is always right. I was worried about losing an unnecessary spade trick at MP and, playing RHO for Kxx of spades, played a heart to dummy. Of course, this cost the contract when LHO was K9/x/KQJxxxx/xxx and RHO xx/AJ98x/xxx/Kxx.

The hand just felt weird. RHO didn't overcall, and he didn't raise diamonds. I wasn't sure what to make of it. Anyway. thanks again. Having thought a lot more about it, I think the spade ace is clearer and clearer.

Respect for RHO returning the heart 9.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.
