LHO opens 1H and you reach 4S as South (so North is dummy and LHO is West).

LHO leads a trump (RHO following) and you see

Plan the play.

Adv/+, please refrain from spoiling too quickly.

Also, this is probably a well known theme hand, so if you find a reference, please add it.

I have 9 tricks and don't see how to play this for the 10th trick.
West has all the points so I can't hook the ♦ or ♥.
Draw trump, cash ♣'s and exit with 8♦?

RHO wins and plays the Heart Ten.

I draw trumps, play 3 rounds of ♣ and play a small heart to the king, playing low if E puts down a low heart, W takes the trick and can't play a small heart back and neither the ace as well.... problem only if E hops up with the ♥T, ....

You can do a little better.

Assuming LHO has HA and DK, there is a guaranteed 100% play (i.e., if I haven't missed anything).

Draw trumps (keeping 2♠), draw three rounds of clubs ending in dummy, lead a diamond. If RHO plays something lower than 8, cover with the 8 and we're okay. (will get either an extra diamond winner or the K♥). If he plays 9-j♦, play the ace. Lead the 2♠ to be back in dummy, lead a diamond. If RHO plays higher than 8♦, play the queen. Otherwise, play the 8. In any case, LHO wins and can't give RHO the lead with diamonds, so he has to cash 2 diamonds and his A of hearts, so our K hearts wins.
The only way I see for this to fail is if RHO has exactly JT9♦. Is it impossible that LHO opened with a 12-count?

Funny how such a simple hand caused so many problems. ♦8 even distracted Ken ;)

Strangely, however, it seems that the crazy 8 lure is only a lure contextually. It seems that without the inference from the opening bid, the line we suckers eventually fell into would be the best line.

Flameous has it! Pio almost had it, and I am pretty sure kuhchung was thinking the same thing.
Glad you guys enjoyed this hand as much as I did.

Nice problem. Thanks for sharing it.
Still decidedly intermediate - don't take my guesses as authoritative.
