Partner is a junior, however, in this position he is reasonably disciplined. You are playing a Multi 2D, 2M shows a 5+M 4+m hand, 2N is Strong. What is your choice if:
1) The opponents are true World-Class players.
2) The opponents are fairly inexperienced.

4, unless they are suspicious of me already, then 4 instead. I plan on competing to lots and lots of diamonds based on whether they reach slam or not.
I once yelled at my partner for discarding the 'wrong' card when he was subjected to a squeeze that I allowed by giving the wrong count with too high a card. Now he's allowed to pitch aces when the opponents have the king in the dummy. At trick 2. When he could have followed suit. And blame me.

Am I reading this incorrectly? Partner opened 3D, so why give information about a 2D multi? Knowing the vul would help as well.
Assuming nv vs vul Anyway, against world class opponents I believe you have 2 real options, 7D or pass and hope they misjudge the auction and only land in a game - unlikely, but it does happen. I would probably bid 7D.

Against weaker players I would bid 3NT in an effort to muddy the waters somewhat. 3H could also work.

This is the real Vulnerability. Nobody Vul. I was just giving a system background (Basically, that partner did not have a weak 2 available).

So you know he couldn't bid a weak 2D- maybe its a good 6.

I know I can be tiresome about finding double fits, but it is that spades are also cheaper than diamonds when opps have hearts.

So if I decide not to psyche I thin kthe best bid is 3 or 4, I try 4

I suspect that 4 might have worked well at the table, especially if it is agreed as fitted, but even if not.

I bid 6.5 diamonds. That solves all my problems.

Perhaps 8D? The late lamented John Collings tried something like that once. But his partner raised hearts to the limit, and the score for 7HX was something like -3200. Though I suppose in this case you can at least escape that to 7S, which won't quite plumb those depths.

True, 7 would only be -2000 (or -2300)

I won't give our auction, but it is fairly safe to say that N might have had some trouble over 7. Perhaps he could figure it out still?

I bid 3H, and if it goes double, and passed back to me I bid 4H. If they dbl again, I'll bid 5D. This is an automatic psyche

Any number of hearts is loathsome. LHO doubles, you run - what have you gained? 6.2 diamonds looks right.

Thats why I bid 4H over the x, and 5D over that inevitable dbl.

if they compete to 6H after that, more power to them.

Personally, I think psyches in this spot are really bad against any but the worst players (who might pass over 3H from me instead of doubling).
Any good partnership will double you for penalties, so in effect you are allowing them to make a forcing bid in hearts at the lowest level.
Same goes for 3NT - you give them more opportunities to sort out their strength.

I think 7 is the normal bid, although 4 (aiming to find a cheaper sac than 7 and possibly muddying the waters as to how many diamonds you have) is my second choice.

Why anyone would think bidding 4 after being doubled in 3 is remotely convincing, I don't know.

Any other psyche options, at least make an effort to preempt them. 6 for example. Good opponents just aren't green enough to fall for low-level sort of stuff like 3H, 3NT etc.

IMO 5 = 10. 4 = 9, 4N = 8, _P = 6, 7 = 5, 6 = 4.
I admire all the psyches but it may be more important to cut out bidding-space without making them guess at slam-level. Team-mates sometimes complain "you forced them into it". Of course, as the cards lie, partner can double 7 by East :)

No offense, but I feel like I'm speaking to a brick wall when I read comments like this.

its partly a running joke. I mean its club game type psyche stuff, not intended for solid fields.

But On saturday at the LB sectional we had a hand come up that was perfect for a psyche.

Playing precision, 10-12 NT, w/r it goes pass pass in front of you and you hold something like

74
Q103
J74
QJ975

I told my partner after the hand that I should've opened one spade. It was an obvious spot for a psyche, and I felt i missed a spot to really make a board changing bid. Since I passed instead we took our -650 and moved on. At the lunch break I asked Mitch Dunitz about the hand, starting by saying I felt I should've opened 1S because it was just obvious the opp had a game, probably in spades. He said he opened the hand 3C, and considered 1S, although "its something I likely would've done when I was younger."

Opening a hand like that with 1 is awful bridge. You're completely screwed if partner raises, you're completely screwed if partner bids something and we wind up declaring at all. You have plenty of defense/spot cards. You are balanced, you have no Aces or Kings. Need I say more? Not even I would psych that 1.
