2N (X) ?? where 2N = strong balanced opener

Last night our opp doubled my partner's 2N opener to show both majors.

It was a shame her partner didn't know (2NX+1 B)).

It got us thinking what we do if X is conventional, or if X is penalties.


What action do you take if:


[A] 2N (X) – where X is conventional (both majors, or maybe S and another, etc)

- how do we compete?

- how do we penalise them?



[B] 2N (X) – where X is penalties

- how do we escape with a bust? [Just the same as our escape after weak 1N is doubled perhaps?]

- how do we compete with values/shape?

- how do we penalise them?

It won't come up very often so just keep it simple and play the same defense as you do against a double of 1NT.

Btw I would play the same regardless of the meaning of the double.

Brings up a funny memory.

I played in the Omar Sharif Individual 1990 (the one Zia won and writes about in his book) and when I partnered David Berah ("bridge immortal" in Victor Mollo's 1968 book, also mentioned in the Bridge Bum) all he said to me when we sat down as partners was "X of 2NT shows the majors!".

I wouldn't spend too much energy on a countermeasure. I haven't seen a hand for this convention in the 20 years since then... B)

A couple of months ago I've encountered a 3♣ overcall showing both Majors. It was a beginner pair, my LHO looked at her memory aid and saw they play Multi-Landy against NT openings... :D We screwed up after a misunderstanding over this overcall. Oh, and obviously LHO didn't even have 5-5, a simple 4-4 was enough... :rolleyes: Biggest bottoms against biggest beginners, it's an exact science!
